Rails

Tomorrow Was The Golden Age, a sublime flight—among our very favorites this past year—was for some (including us) an introduction to Bing & Ruth. While David Moore & friends had provided a proper entry point five years earlier. Quietly self-released at the time, City Lake will now see a newly mastered and expanded run this fall via RVNG Intl. The work of an eleven-piece ensemble, this debut album has a more physical (while no less transcendent) feel compared to its successor.

The bright, astir “Rails” presents Moore at piano, underscored by strings, horns and hand-claps. Its accompanying visual, directed by Seba Cros, captures the contemplative trance of train ride, with the outside world flickering alongside.

City Lake is out November 13th, before a string of live dates revisiting the material. Suggested places to go from here: a dream, and a cliffside performance at FORM Arcosanti.

A summer’s respite, a screen’s dimness down, eyes squinted, interface giving way to pasture, the hum of a windowless building and episode 34.

The first hour belonged to Patient Sounds, meaning all 60 minutes of sound were exceptionally patient/from the PS catalog. The second hour remained mostly in the present (excluding some Italian psych and the heavy air of Pure X), featuring London producer (and recent Jenny Hval-re-worker) Kelly Lee Owen‘s tribute to Arthur Russell, Leon Vynehall‘s tribute to autobahns, Molly Nilsson‘s tribute to Windows 95’, and Julia Holter’s tribute to solitude in chaos (and perhaps her dog).

Gold Again

“When my then two-year-old daughter Gray first uttered the words “Loud” to describe the Sun’s brightness, I was given an anchor to ground what was then just a small batch of murky demo recordings.”

Minneapolis-based songwriter Andrew Jansen (Crimes, Dial-Up) introduces his new solo album with that simple, sunny epiphany. (((LOUD))) finds Jansen amid a two year spell in the Bay Area, settled into a jangly, reverb-heavy mode that’s as inviting as its J-card art (designed by Nathaniel). The tender, meandering “Gold Again” opens Side A:

The tape is out September 1st via MJ MJ Records. A few more tracks are available now, along with the pre-order, at bandcamp.
