Across a series of American vistas appears an amphibian Where’s Waldo of sorts. He sleeps in abandoned playgrounds, he frequents novelty roadside attractions, he practices Tai chi in a parking lot, his movements strangely hypnotic. The character is a cryptic presence in three videos from Going Steady, the new album by Los Angeles-based musician, Driftless Recordings co-founder, and S&S Dreams alumnus Patrick McDermott. 3-D modeled out of the LP’s cover illustrated by Brian Blomerth, the frog becomes a fitting mascot for a collection of rolling instrumentals that scan immediately as serene yet wink a little more clever with each spin.

McDermott recorded Going Steady with friends (Julianna Barwick, Hayden Pedigo, Joel Williams, Hand Habit’s Meg Duffy, Cloud Nothings’ Dylan Baldi), tapping into an appreciation for the way finger-picked acoustics play with the great outdoors. “This record is very rooted in California and the West, both in tradition and in concept,” he recently told Los Angeles Times. “I grew up on American Primitive guitar and this was sort of my modern ode to the genre. In a time that feels more complicated than ever — I was drawn to simple music.”

McDermott follows that mode further for episode 64, a sprawling set featuring classic and contemporary strummers and tinkerers.

Germany

Swaths of cloth pinwheel in the passat. Evergreen strobic void in the streets of Munich.

“Don’t get too close!” the crowd shouts.

“That window’s open!”

“Look, look! They’re barely on!”

This jagged game… a rifted plane… how they brighten at dropping prospects, to dance and dare. A centimeter spin from disintegration, or perhaps a chance encounter with the Great Landscaper, forever rolling over those hills.

One tangles with another…

“Oooo… Oh my….” erupts from the terrace.

An unbalanced reach—a miss gasp.

Forever pinwheeling in the passat.

North Americans is Los Angeles-based artist (and Driftless Recordings co-founder) Patrick McDermott. His debut LP, NO_NO, was released in 2015. Next month, Patrick will be at Moogfest as part of the interactive installation Unholy Matrimony Noise Music + Sparse Videogame Worlds.

Dreams is an ongoing project where we ask our favorite artists to create a piece of music inspired by a handmade collage.

Silver

Ejecta’s “Silver” is beyond recognition in this amorphous hymn, yet flecks of it still rise and shimmer and whisper around. Droning out a perfectly good pop song is an underrated art. Patrick McDermott, who creates as North Americans and co-runs Driftless Recordings, has an uncanny handle on it—he’s taken CFCF to similar heights.

While drifting in the greyscale here, the label will soon release an ambient compilation, as well as the fascinating debut LP from Megafortress.

Somber and hopeful, “Live in Grace” finds Bill Gillim airing out vivid lines of forgiveness in his barest, most straightforward vocal performance to date. Not to be taken lightly, Believer is out November 4th.
