Stadiums & Shrines
S&S-NewtownRadio-E40

An episode, the 40th of its kind, featuring night music from two vantages:

Let’s begin inside the first hour: after a short freeform sequence (including new sounds from Yaman Palak and Cross Record), there’s “Most Nights, Late”, a downtempo walk home/come down courtesy of MAYMIND. This dates back to last October, where Leo tastefully DJed our church show with Portals, and (because he’s an exceptional person) even prepared a mix to share ahead of the evening. Lost in the pre-event hustle, it never did air—until this week, conveniently in sync with the release of his debut EP on New Kanada.

Fifteen minutes into the second hour, the nocturne shifts toward a set by Sascha Muhr. When sending over this dark, cerebral suite, the experimental producer described a night of spiraling excess on the streets of Tübingen, Germany.

Payapaya

We’re honored to introduce to the latest installment of Singles Club, featuring Dustin Wong & Takako Minekawa. Above is “Payapaya”, a song the duo recorded for this 7″ release, and a collage Nathaniel created while listening to it. The digital issue in full (with an interview, gear interface diagram, playlist, and some words from us) is out today.

observer

To date, the stream from Montreal’s johnny_ripper has revealed an artist with a keen sense for the sublime and an overactive ear for obscure source material. These glimpses into a late night nirvana of sorts have for the most part been singular, made by (and for) a loner. Which makes the multi-medium “Observer (Natalie’s Song)” an interesting development.

Last April, Jean attended a friend’s show that opened with readings. Natalie Reid (pictured below, credit: Jeremy Clarke) recited her words from memory, leaving Jean, in his words, “devastated.” With notions of self-image and perception, the piece existentially resonated, like a direct counter to the “isolated headspace” Jean functions in. It stayed with him, and after some time, he reached out “as a stranger” to collaborate. From there, we now hear this: that night’s lines underscored by Jean’s beats, all formed from field recordings (keys, glass cracks, door knocks, light switches, bicycle bells and beyond) and a micro-sampling of Clara Rockmore’s “Song of Grusia”.

The theme continues across johnny_ripper’s upcoming album, Selfless, his first since 2014’s epilogue.
