Lights coruscate as the fog emanates, informing the present. The centermost vent—time’s origin—a geyser as thick as the bellows at the froth of the falls, directs all. Past and future converse in the steam, bending in rivers, tipping clocks, sweeping about the trees.

Lives are a landscape across which banks of fog roll, revealing what is to come, concealing what’s elapsed.

Directly into the mist, she peers, throwing a lamp’s lit sneer. Two sets of eyes look back, one skips betwixt with a child’s giggle and fresh grass scents. The other glares back coarsely, framed by fine and furrowed lines of skin.

She holds a glacial gaze for perhaps another minute, or eight, or an epoch, fixed in the forecasting terrain events as they replay, a cascade.

“Peering into mineral structures reveals a still, drawn out dynamism, a symphony of silent and expanding sound; energy and movement.”

Ran to the hardware store this weekend, happened upon a gallery. Modular synth emitted from an open garage door, beyond it: 13 paintings by Brooklyn artist Lauren Klein, all vibrating within a sound sculpture by Luke Crawford.

The ‘synesthetic experience’ is on view now at Immersive Gallery, open weekends and evenings for the month of August. A few pieces, below:

Ahead of his new album out tomorrow, here’s a “Needlemix” and note from M. Sage:

“The process of recording my latest cassette, Needleworks, was intentionally primitive. I dramatically restricted by gear; my only sound source was running an old mid-century turntable I have through a few guitar effect pedals (reverb, analog delay), and then two loop pedals to create phrases, and so, compositions. I wanted to make something that sounds like the “computer music” that I make without using a computer at all. I ended up recording 50+ tracks/takes, and so, during this process, I ended up listening to TONS of records through this rig looking for sounds, textures, etc…I thought it would be fun to make a mix, a more traditional DJ set, on this rig, and so, I reassembled it last night and made this mix for you using the same rig I used to make my tape. There are no computer effects or “sampling” here, everything is live/improvised guitar pedals+turntable. I hope you enjoy it, and thank you for listening.”

Welcome to Lake Sage…

On a summer night, under a blood moon in 2014, Chaz Prymek (who records as Lake Mary) and Matthew Sage riffed in a Fort Collins basement and emerged with a set of devotional mountain folk instrumentals called Wolfwalkers in Daylight. That night their guitars aligned in language; a conversation between dark and light; bliss and sadness; a wordless dialogue that feels especially weighted upon playback in 2016. At the request of the artists, these songs are shared today, and dedicated to anyone struggling to process intense emotions.

Here are two poems by Octavio Paz selected and “(mis)translated” by Sage, followed by a few 35mm photographs of the Colorado front range taken at dawn:

Apparition

If a singular human is dust
Those who cross the plain
Are unified

Dawn

Fast cold hands
Retreat one by one
The darkness of bandages
Eyes awakening
Still

I am a life
At the center
of a wound still fresh
