Water and Concrete 02

Tone and texture are deeply studied here over three ambient pieces by composer Daniel Weismayr and producer Alex Ives (aka SPECIMENS). Each interprets a different photograph from Lucie Rox‘s Greyhounds series (shot around Chicago and South Baltimore). Once submerged in the set, these static images almost begin to ripple and vibrate along.

Water and Concrete is available on cassette with fold out A4 prints through Tenderly Surrender.

Noah Klein constructs a kind of pop “between escapist dreaming and reason”, as No Fear of Pop so thoughtfully posited two years ago—not just a safe haven but a “nucleus for the emergence of true consciousness.”

In-person, like his music suggests, Noah radiates an inviting aura. It’s been proven waterproof, most memorably under a rainbow parachute on the roof of FMLY Fest 2013. And again last Tuesday as he stood in the rain outside Newtown’s studio, shielded only by the guitar case on his back. Any worries heading into Episode 38 were left right there at the door. Bleeding from the walls of the neighboring practice space, a shoegaze-y band played with impressive stamina and volume. Noah confronted them with crickets, neutralizing the noise over a short set of new Cuddle Formation material (followed seamlessly by a playlist to finish the first hour). Upon playback, the unaffected recording confirms his (noise-proof) poise throughout.

Dreams of Thailand

Broadcasting a transmission, out and into the ether, live from the stage, from the microcosmic amphitheater. On the shores of the river, the audience lingers, sculling the wake in skiffs. The station operators cluster about the temple’s fells, and shivering slightly ankle bells. Silken flutter and spinning narrative web around and about. Puncturing the atmosphere, the dome, with a message of varying clarity, but a promise. The signal from the crystal set claims to herald from Yialmel …

… But from here, across a barrier, through a window or a screen, in a dream, receiving the transmission with a diode sheen:

It’s unclear if the signal means, but certainly the beacon sings.
